Emergency Management Training

Course registration is limited to individuals working in an emergency management function.

The Emergency Management Office develops and delivers a variety of emergency management training programs throughout Nova Scotia. These programs are aimed at ensuring municipal, provincial and federal officials have the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage emergencies.

Training courses offered by EMO include:

  • This two-day course is designed to provide an overview of the Emergency Management System, in Nova Scotia. Including the systems, process and structures, for mitigating, preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies. Participants will discuss current federal, provincial, and municipal emergency legislation, components of an emergency plan, the relationship between emergency sites and emergency operations centres and the role of media. Additionally, there will be tabletop exercises for each module. The course emphasizes a coordinated, integrated approach to emergency management.  BEM course requires an understanding of Incident Command System 100.  Students must have ICS 100 prior to attending the BEM course.  A self-study ICS course is listed at the following location on this website http://emo.gov.ns.ca/content/incident-command-system-100.

  • This three-day course is designed to train participants to effectively manage and coordinate overall operations within their communities or organization, while providing the necessary support to the site management team during a multi-service response to an emergency. Course participants will apply the course concepts in simulated emergency situations. The course emphasizes a coordinated, integrated approach to emergency management. This is an advanced level course. Candidates must have successfully completed the Basic Emergency Management Course.

  •  ICS level 100 is a prerequisite for ICS levels 200, 300, 400 and all advanced level emergency management courses offered by The Emergency Management Office.

    Incident Command System (ICS) Level - 100 is an overview of the ICS system, including the ICS structure, processes, area's of responsibility and incident management concepts.

    This course is intended for anyone who will be involved in emergency first response, Emergency Operation Centre Management and Emergency Site Management.

  • This advanced level two and a half day course is designed to enable personnel to operate as effective Command Team members of the NS Joint Emergency Operations Centre. Participants will learn about JEOC guiding principles, etiquette, administrative organization, command team roles and responsibilities, policies, procedures, E-Team and other supports. Participants will apply course concepts in simulated emergency situations. Candidates must have successfully completed the Basic Emergency Management Course,  Incident Command System 100 and have a role in the JEOC or be an active member of the emergency management community.

  • Incident Command System, I-200 introduces how the Incident Command System (ICS) is used to manage Single Resources and the management required for initial action incidents and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course builds on I-100, going into more detail of the features and principles and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. Course participants will be better prepared to function as an initial Incident Commander.   At the successful completion of this course students will be able to:

    demonstrate a basic knowledge of managing single resources and establishing command using the Incident Command System. 

    The target audience includes persons who may be first on the scene of an incident and be assigned to a supervisory position in a larger incident and ICS organization. The prerequisite for I-200 is successful completion of I-100. 

  • Intermediate ICS Expanding Incidents

    Target audience

    The target audience for this course is individuals, who may assume a supervisory role in expanding incidents or type 3 Staff positions may be activated, as well as Division /Group Supervisor and/or Unit Leader level positions. These incidents may extend into multiple operational periods.
