This three-day course is designed to provide an overview of emergency management, and the systems, process for mitigating, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies and disasters. Participants will discuss current federal, provincial and municipal emergency legislation, components of an emergency plan, emergency site management, emergency operations centre, managing the media and participate in tabletop exercises, simulating an emergency response. The course emphasizes a coordinated, integrated approach to emergency management. This is an entry level course and is a prerequisite for all advanced courses.
Emergency Management Training

The Emergency Management Office develops and delivers a variety of emergency management training programs throughout Nova Scotia. These programs are aimed at ensuring municipal, provincial and federal officials have the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage emergencies.

Course participants will apply the course concepts in simulated emergency situations. The course emphasizes a coordinated, integrated approach to emergency management.
This is an advanced level course. Candidates must have successfully completed the Basic Emergency Management Course.

This three-day course is designed to enable participants to direct, control, and coordinate joint operations at an emergency site. Course material will cover the principles of the Emergency Site Management System including a coordinated multi-service/jurisdictional response at an emergency site. Course participants will apply the course concepts in complex simulated emergency situations.
This is an advanced level course. Candidates must have completed the Basic Emergency Management (BEM) course.

This course is structured to provide emergency management coordinators and/or planners with the skills necessary to design, deliver and evaluate emergency management exercises. Such exercises will test emergency plans to the fullest and identified potential plan flaws or shortfalls, while providing suggested corrective actions. No emergency plan is fully complete until it has been appropriately exercised to determine its effectiveness in responding to all potential emergencies.
This is an advanced level course. Candidates must have successfully completed the Basic Emergency Management course.

The Emergency Public Information course is designed to provide participants with information on developing an emergency public information plan for their community or organization, and responding to public and media inquiries during an emergency. This course should be taken by those individuals designated as the community or organization emergency public information officer or media contact person, as well as individuals who may have to speak to the media during an emergency. This is an advanced level course. Candidates must have successfully completed the Basic Emergency Management Course.

This three day workshop-based course is designed to give participants an excellent understanding of business continuity management. It’s based on the Business Continuity Institute's Good Practice Guidelines 2007 edition and 10 certification standards. Reviewing and applying EMO Nova Scotia's operational procedure for implementing business continuity management in an organization and developing business continuity plans will be key throughout the three days. The procedures, forms, templates and detailed instructions participants work with throughout the course may be applied directly to any public or private sector workplace setting. This is an advanced-level course. Completion of the Basic Emergency Management course is preferred. Experience with business continuity, emergency management or emergency planning is a definite asset.
