Disaster Financial Assistance
EMO is responsible for the administration of authorized Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) programs approved by the Province of Nova Scotia.
Disaster and near disaster events have imposed, in some instances, severe financial stress on both the province and its citizens. DFA programs are intended to cover the costs of restoring property to its pre-disaster condition.
The Program
Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) programs are designed to help municipalities, individuals, farmers, small business, and non-profit organizations get back on their feet after a disaster. DFA does not cover the cost of all losses and damages to property resulting from the disaster.
DFA is not intended to be an alternative or a substitute for adequate insurance coverage. In the event of a natural disaster, individuals are expected to bear the initial responsibility for their losses. If the losses are so extensive that individuals cannot cope on their own, the DFA is intended to provide financial support.
If municipalities have experienced extraordinary damage to public infrastructure due to a natural disaster, they should contact their local emergency management office to determine if the damages sustained are eligible for assistance.
