The Emergency Management Office (EMO) works closely with other provincial agencies, boards, commissions and departments, as well as private industry, to ensure effective emergency management in the province.
Business Continuity Management
EMO supports the development of business continuity management across provincial government departments, agencies, boards, commissions, and municipalities by providing a method for implementation, development tools, and training and consultation services. Through business continuity management, government develops strategies to deliver urgently required services during emergencies and to resume normal operations as promptly and efficiently as possible after an emergency.

Critical Infrastructure and Essential Services
Critical infrastructure is defined as processes, systems, facilities, technologies, networks, assets and services essential to the health, safety, security and economic well-being of citizens and the effective functioning of government. Critical infrastructure can be stand-alone or interconnected and interdependent within and across provinces, territories and national borders. Disruptions of critical infrastructure could result in catastrophic loss of life, adverse economic effects, and significant harm to public confidence.
In Nova Scotia we recognize that most critical infrastructure in the province is not owned by government; therefore we must work closely with business owners and operators to ensure the resiliency of the infrastructure.
We work closely with business and private companies in various ways such as:
- promotion of timely information sharing
- identification of issues of national or regional concern
- use of subject-matter expertise to provide guidance
- development of tools and best practices for strengthening the resiliency of critical infrastructure across the full spectrum of prevention/mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
